Lesson 15 Good news

The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. I felt very nervous when I went into his office. He did not look up from his desk when I entered.

After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twentypeople had already left. I knew that my turn had come.

"Mr.Harmsworth," I said in a weak voice.

"Don"t interrupt," he said.

Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!

本课语法：间接引语

当你想要引用别人的话时，一般有两种方式。

一种是直接引述别人的原话，叫直接引语，例如Mary said ‘I’m feeling ill.’

另一种是用自己的话转述别人的话，叫间接引语（说别人八卦的时候常用的），如Mary said that she was feeling ill.

第15课中出现了大量间接引语，比如下面这两句：

1.He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries.

他告诉我, 公司支付不起这么庞大的工资开支。

2.After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad.

待我坐下后, 他说生意非常不景气。

我们可以看到，陈述句的间接引语中，最常用的动词是say和tell，tell后面必须跟表示人称的间接宾语（tell sb.），而say后面则可以直接跟that引导的从句。

另外，直接引语变间接引语时，时态也要发生变化，可参照以下例句（往前推了一个时态）

‘I am busy,’ he said.

“我忙，”他说道。

He says that he is busy.

他说他忙。

He said that he was busy.

他说过他忙。

如果主句的动词为一般过去时, 从句动词也要变成相对应的过去时态。

他告诉我，公司支付不起这么高的工资。

afford v. “负担得起，有能力做”，常与can/can’t 连用。

I can only afford one week for the trip.

我只能支付一周的旅费。

I can’t afford to be ill again.

我不能再生病了。
