Lesson 9 A cold welcome

On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock.

It would strike twelve in twenty minutes" time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted.

"It"s two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!" I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing.

还可以用in表示用时多久：

I learnt to drive in four weeks.

（=it took me four weeks to learn）

我在四周内学会了开车。

（这里in+段时间表示花了多长时间，时态可以不用一般将来时。）

in +年份、月份、季节 （一段时间内）

She came to this city in 1980.

她1980年来到这座城市。

The days are long in summer.

夏天白天长。

She is having a baby in October.

她十月份要生孩子了。

在早上、下午、晚上用in，

in the morning/in the afternoon/in the evening

I had a chat with Lars in the morning.

我早上和拉斯聊了会天。

15分钟过去了， 而就在11点55分时，大钟停了。

at + 一天之内的某个时间点 at eight o’clock

（night/ midnight/noon）

In、on、at区别：

on+具体某一天、或具体某一天的上下午

in+时间段 表将来；in+时间段 表示用时多久；in+季节/月份/年份；in the morning/afternoon / /evening；
