Lesson 14 Do you speak English?

I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me.

I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language. Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all.

Neither of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly, "Do you speak English?" As I soon learnt, he was English himself!"

今天要学第14课。

课文讲的是主人公去法国时遇到了一位年轻人，双方都误以为对方是法国人，因此一开始就用法语交谈，最后却误打误撞发现了对方原来都是英国人。这经历像极了大多数去国外旅行的我们，尤其是去亚洲国家时，很难直接得知对方的国籍。

本课语法：过去完成时

1.定义：表示在过去某个时间或动作之前已经完成的动作。

2.时态结构：had+过去分词

本课重点句1：

After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town.

在离开法国南部的一个小村庄后, 我继续驶往下一个城镇。

过去完成时表示"过去的过去"，是指过去某一动作之前已经发生或完成的动作，即动作有先后关系，动作在前的用过去完成时，在后的用一般过去时。

这句话中，“leave”这个动作在“drive”这个动作之前，“因此leave”用过去完成时，“drive”用一般过去时。

The train had started when I got to the station.

当我到达车站时火车已开走了。

本课重点句2：

As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language.

他一上车, 我就用法语向他问早上好, 他也同样用法语回答我。

as soon as“一……就……”，后面接时间状语从句，强调两个动作几乎是连在一起的，但get into the car这个动作仍然先于say good morning，所以前者用过去完成时，后者用一般过去时。

The sun set. We returned to our hotel.

太阳下山了，我们回到了旅馆。

As soon as the sun had set we returned to our hotel.

太阳一下山了我们就回到了旅馆。
